Last year the Conservation District, with funding from the Orange County Land Trust, worked with Lewis Signs of Slate Hill to begin a project to further public recognition of the conservation work local farmers are doing. The idea was to create signs highlighting farmer conservation activities, and post them in visible locations. For farms that had frequent visitors, a 3' x 4' farmstead sign was proposed that would include the farmer's name, sources of funding for conservation projects, and related information. For farms that did not have frequent visitors, a 4' x 5' roadside sign was proposed. The larger signs needed to be much briefer with large lettering in order to be readable from a passing vehicle. Our idea was to include the Conservation District's website on the signs. Interested persons who followed up on seeing the sign by visiting our website would lead you to this page where you can now get more detailed information on the projects completed, including pictures. To date, five signs have been distributed to farmers at no cost to them. As long as funding remains available, this will be an ongoing program and all farmers interested in receiving a sign of their own are encouraged to contact our office.
