Big Tree Contest Tree Nomination Form

Is The Largest Tree Located in Your Municipality
or even on Your Property?

Do you know of a tree in your town that could make the “Big Tree” list? If you think you might, fill out the entry form below and enter our contest!

Maybe that big tree on your property, or even on a friend’s property, is the largest tree in Orange County. The top tree of each individual species from the Town will be entered into a County Contest.

Our goal is to locate the “Monster” trees in Orange County, while promoting interest in their care and preservation.

All pictures received will be posted on the Orange County Soil and Water Conservation District’s website (www.ocsoil.org).

Big trees can provide information about natural history and forest ecology while adding beauty to our landscape.

You can take your tree to the highest level of competition!

Level I- Identify tree species if possible. Send in a photo of you standing next to your big tree.

Level II- Identify tree species. Send in a photo of you standing next to your big tree. Submit necessary measurements. Measuring              guide is listed below.

Circumference is measured at 4 ½ feet above                                         If the tree forks before the 4 ½ foot mark,
ground level in inches.                                                                     record the smallest circumference below the fork.

Total tree height is the distance between the base of the tree trunk and the topmost visible twig. The most reliable measuring tools are the Abney hand level, hypsometer, a transit, a clinometer, a relascope, or a laser. For people with out these tools, we suggest the stick method! - Find or cut a stick that is the exact length as “your” arm. Walk away from the tree to a point where, by holding the stick vertically at arm’s length, the top of your hand is at the base of the tree and the top of the stick is at the topmost visible twig. Mark your standing location. Now, measure the distance from that marked point to the base of the tree, this is the estimated height of your “big tree”.

Two measurements of the crown spread are taken and recorded (in feet), at right angles to one another. The first is the widest crown spread, which is the greatest distance between any two points along the drip line of the tree. (The drip line is the outline on the ground of the outermost leaves of the crown.) Once the widest spread has been found, turn the axis of measurement 90 degrees and find the crown spread. The two crown spreads are averaged together. Each Level II tree that is nominated will be given a point score based on the received measurements. Any “Big Tree” species that scores high against the current State Champion will be nominated to the NYSDEC.

IDENTIFY YOUR TREE!! You can identify most trees by studying their leaves, seeds and fruit. Easily identify your tree by visiting this website:  EASY TREE ID
